Zimny's Last-Second Jumper Lifts Mighty Macs, 60-58

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Alison Zimny provided the heroics Thursday night as her jumper with just two seconds left in regulation was the game-winner for Immaculata University's women's basketball team. The visiting Mighty Macs (15-5, 10-1 CSAC) were able to defeat the Cyclones of Centenary College, 60-58, in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
 
Zimny had previously sunk a 3-point field goal with 1:26 to play to overtake Centenary, 58-57. It was the Mighty Macs' first lead since the 11:58 mark of the second half. Centenary then tied the game at 58-all just inside one minute after Kelsey Barofski connected on the first end of her free throws.
 
Immaculata held a 10-point lead (38-28) just over two minutes into the second half when Centenary got hot from the field. The Cyclones outscored the Mighty Macs 17-2 over a seven-minute span as they took a 45-40 lead with 10:47 to play in the game.
 
Adriana Sciascia ended an 11-point run for Centenary as she drained a three, and she then had a jumper to tie the contest at 45-45 with 9:40 left. However, the Cyclones went on an 8-1 spurt to go ahead, 53-46, with 6:24 remaining.
 
Sciascia helped stage the Mighty Macs' comeback as she poured in seven points during a 9-2 run in just over three minutes. Immaculata trailed just 55-53 with 2:36 left after Sciascia's final basket of the run. Sara Smith then tied the contest (55-55) for the Mighty Macs with a jumper with 2:08 left on the clock.
 
Barofski, who scored 11 points for the Cyclones (7-13, 5-6 CSAC), gave them their final lead, 57-55, with 1:41 left in the game.
 
Sciascia paced the Mighty Macs with 18 points and four steals. Zimny finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Smith chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, while Brittany Merkle fell one point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. 
 
After Centenary scored on its first possession of the game, Smith scored her first bucket of the game and Mackie Fitzgerald added free throw at the 17:20 mark giving the Mighty Macs a lead they would hold the rest of the first stanza. Immaculata led by as many as 16 before taking a 12-point edge (36-24) into the locker room.
 
Immaculata will be at home Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. hosting Marywood.
