Big Second Half Lifts Immaculata To Season-Opening Victory, 19-11

Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J.-The Immaculata women's lacrosse team got off to a great start in 2014 by outscoring Rutgers-Camden (0-1) by a count of 14-3 after halftime on their way to a 19-11 season-opening victory.  Senior Katie Cook and sophomore Allison Jakavick (one assist) paced the Mighty Macs with six goals apiece.

Sophomore Kelly Lapp, last year's leading goal scorer, netted three goals in the first game of the season, while junior Danielle Lopez (two assists) and sophomore Shannon Neill (three assists) scored two goals each to round out the scoring for the Mighty Macs.

Trailing 10-7 with just under 19 minutes to go in the game, the Mighty Macs swung the game in their favor by scoring 12 consecutive goals over the next 16 minutes to take control of their season opener.  Lapp scored the first goal of the run from Lopez before Lopez got on the board herself on an assist from Neill to make it 10-9.  The Mighty Macs then scored three goals in a 1:28 stretch while playing down a player to take the lead.  Cook scored twice around a Jakavick goal to make it 12-10.

Jakavick would then go on to score four of the next seven goals while Lapp, Cook, and Lopez each scored once to put IU up 19-10.  Rutgers-Camden would add a goal to bring the game to the final of 19-11.

Senior goalie Nicole Behrndt collected seven saves to earn her 12th career win and first of 2014.  The defense of junior Andrea Okoro and sophomore Lucy Hud, along with Behrndt, buckled down in the second half to hold Rutgers-Camden to just three second half goals.

In the first half, Immaculata scored the first two goals less than four minutes into the game on tallies by Lapp and Neill to put the Mighty Macs up 2-0 early.  However, Rutgers-Camden scored nine of the next twelve goals to take a 9-5 advantage just after halftime.

The Mighty Macs will have their next game on Tuesday, March 11th at 4 p.m. against Albright College.

NOTES: Behrndt now has the fourth most saves in IU history with 125 passing Sara DiSimone (2007) and Amanda Balsama (2005-06) … Neill moved into fifth in Immaculata history in career assists with 30 passing Kacie O'Neill (2009-11).
