Cabrini Tops Immaculata Women's Basketball, 59-48

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's modest two-game winning streak was halted on Wednesday night as visiting Cabrini College came into Alumnae Hall and defeated the Mighty Macs, 59-48, in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's basketball action.
 
The Mighty Macs, who have already clinched a berth in the upcoming CSAC Tournament, fall to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in the CSAC. The Cavaliers, who were ranked seventh in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings released today, improve to 18-4, 12-1 CSAC, taking sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
 
Adriana Sciascia led Immaculata in scoring for the third-straight game with 19 points. Sara Smith added eight points and four rebounds, while Alison Zimny chipped in seven points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Brittany Merkle led the Mighty Macs on the glass with a career-high 17 rebounds, while having six points, four assists and three steals. Mackie Fitzgerald dished out a team-leading seven assists during the game.
 
The Mighty Macs led for almost the entire first half. Immaculata started the game on a 5-0 run during the opening minute before Cabrini and Immaculata were all square at 7-7 by the 16:08 mark. The two teams then hit a bit of a rough patch from the field for a four-minute stretch before Sciascia had a jumper for the Mighty Macs with 12:18 remaining to give the hosts the advantage (9-7).
 
The Cavaliers answered at the 11:47 mark with a 3-pointer which proved to be Cabrini's only lead of the first half, 10-9. Immaculata rattled in seven consecutive points to regain the lead and push it to six (16-10) with 9:28 left in the first half.
 
After Cabrini cut the score to just one (16-15) with 8:31 left on the clock, Immaculata outscored the visitors, 15-7, during the final 8:02 of the opening half. The Mighty Macs led by as many as 12 (31-19) before settling into halftime with a nine-point edge, 31-22.
 
Sciascia had 14 points at the break as Immaculata was able to shoot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the field. Cabrini was held to just 22.9 percent (8-35) from the field and was just 3-for-9 (.333) from the free throw line.
 
The Mighty Macs opened the second half with two made free throws by Smith to push their lead back into double figures (33-22). However, Immaculata's lead would quickly vanish as Cabrini outscored the Mighty Macs, 13-2, in just over three minutes to tie the game at 35-all.  
 
Cabrini's Dana Peterson put the Cavaliers ahead, 37-35, with 14:22 remaining after she swiped the ball from the Mighty Macs and put in the easy layup. Immaculata trailed by just one (41-40) with 8:47 to play in the contest after Sciascia had another jumper. However, nine-straight points by Cabrini gave the visitors a double-digit advantage (50-40) that proved too much for Immaculata.
 
Brittany Sandone led Cabrini with 18 points, including four 3-pointers during the second half that aided in the Cavaliers comeback. Annie Rivituso had 15 points and Amber Keys had 12.
 
Immaculata is back in action on Saturday afternoon traveling up to Keystone College at 1 p.m.
