Immaculata Puts Rosemont Away, 63-58

ROSEMONT, Pa. – Mackie Fitzgerald hit a wide-open 3-point field goal with 2:10 remaining in the game to break a 51-51 tie, and Immaculata University was 6-for-7 at the free throw line during the final minute, to seal the 63-58 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's basketball win against host Rosemont College Wednesday evening.
 
Immaculata stays perfect in conference play extending its mark to 14-4 overall and 9-0 in the CSAC. Rosemont drops to 6-11, 4-5 CSAC.
 
After trailing by one (24-23) at halftime, the Mighty Macs came out and grabbed the lead after two free throws by Alison Zimny at the 18:14 mark. Immaculata cushioned its advantage to eight points through much of the second half, before Rosemont made its strongest run during the game's final seven minutes.
 
Nymira Nelson had a jumper for the Ravens followed by Liz Coyne with a layup to cut the hosts' deficit to 49-45 with 6:51 left in the game. Kierra Smith then completed Rosemont's comeback with two straight baskets to knot the score at 49-all with 3:17 remaining.
 
Zimny gave the Mighty Macs the lead with her layup with 2:55 to play. But, Coyne tied the game at 51-51 with 2:23 left. That set up Fitzgerald's wide-open three with 2:10 on the clock – her only basket from the field – which handed Immaculata the lead once and for all.
 
Meghan Gallagher hit one free throw and Zimny converted on a three-point play to extend the Mighty Macs' lead to 58-51 with 43 seconds to go. The Ravens wouldn't go down without a fight as Curtrena Goff converted her own three-point play (58-54) with 34 ticks left.
 
After Adriana Sciascia hit one of two free throw attempts, Coyne made it a one-possession game (59-56) with a layup with just 25 seconds left. Immaculata's strong free throw shooting took over as Rosemont was forced to foul. Fitzgerald sunk both of her free throws with 24.1 remaining and Sciascia later sealed the game with her to makes with 12.3 left.
 
Sara Smith led the Mighty Macs with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Zimny finished with 14 points, and Sciascia had 13 points and three assists. Brittany Merkle added eight points and seven rebounds.
 
Immaculata hosts Neumann on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. inside Alumnae Hall.
