Mighty Macs Fall Late To Albright, 2-1

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata women's soccer fought back from an early deficit against Albright to tie the game in the second half, but an 84th minute goal by the Lions (1-2-0) lifted them to a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Macs (0-2-0).  Junior Rachel Gannon scored in the 54th minute to tie the game, but Immaculata was unable to score the go-ahead goal.

Albright controlled the pace early in the game and capitalized by netting the first goal of the game in the 17th minute.  Emily Sousa slipped past the defense from thirty yards out and ripped a shot past junior goalie Meghan McCurnin to lift the Lions to a 1-0 advantage.

The Mighty Macs got into an offensive rhythm late in the first half when Gannon gave Immaculata their best chance of the opening 45 minutes.  She made a move to elude the defender and ripped a shot from just inside the box that was deflected over the net by goalie Alexis Lorusso.  That led to a string of four corners by the Mighty Macs to close out the half that gave them momentum moving toward the final 45 minutes.

In the 49th minute, Gannon made sure the deficit did not last long as junior Rebecca Stack sent a perfect feed from midfield that Gannon took and deposited in the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.  The goal was the first of the season for Gannon, who had seven last year, and the assist was the second of her career for Stack.

The Lions then turned the offensive pressure back on, but sophomore Elizabeth McBride stood tall in net after coming in at halftime.  She made a save on a breakaway moments after Immaculata tied it, and she made another game-saving stop in the 65th minute to keep the score locked at 1-1.

With the score still tied heading into the waning moments of regulation, Albright netted the deciding goal.  Megan O'Brien sent a pass from beyond midfield that Erin Hand tracked down and chipped over McBride's head for the game-winning goal.

McBride played very well in relief in her Immaculata debut as she stopped five Albright shots and kept the Mighty Macs in the game in the second half.

Immaculata will seek their first win this Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown for a 3:30 p.m. start.

NOTES: Gannon moved into 10th place alone on the all-time goals list with eight for her career … Immaculata is now 2-10-2 all-time against Albright.
