BOX SCORE GAME 1
BOX SCORE GAME 2
IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata (10-11, 4-6 CSAC) came out looking to sweep Centenary in a weekend series, but Centenary (14-12-1, 6-5 CSAC) came away with a 2-1 win in 12 innings in game one and a 5-3 victory in game two. The twelve inning game was the longest game in Immaculata history. In game two, the Cyclones erased a late 3-1 deficit to sweep the Mighty Macs.
In the first game, Centenary got the go-ahead run in the top of the twelfth on three consecutive singles to capture the victory. Freshman
John Ryan (1-1) surrendered the tie-breaking run and took the loss. Junior pitcher
Kirk Wenzler came in with the bases loaded and one out and successfully escaped the jam without allowing any more runs. In the bottom of the inning, the Mighty Macs had two runners reach, but a fly out and strikeout ended it with the Cyclones on top 2-1.
The first game was dominated by pitching by junior pitcher
Bryan McHale and Centenary's Mitch Renz. McHale was outstanding for the fourth consecutive conference game as he went eight innings and tied a personal and Immaculata single-game high with eleven strikeouts. He scattered six hits while walking just one, but did not factor into the decision.
Centenary pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the tenth after Joe Forcellini hit a two-out triple. Ryan Caparoni then hit a groundball to shortstop that junior
Joe DiGiaimo was unable to handle, which allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.
In their half of the tenth, Immaculata tied the game on a pair of singles. Sophomore right fielder Matthew Lawson (3-for-5, R) hit an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, junior second baseman Elijah Vottero (1-for-5, RBI) delivered a clutch game-tying single up the middle to score Lawson and send the game to the eleventh.
The Mighty Macs had their first base runner in the bottom of the third when junior center fielder
Alex Kobylinski (2-for-4, 2B) hit a double to the left field wall, but he was retired when Mitch Renz struck out junior catcher
Patrick Boulware (1-for-5) to keep the game scoreless.
In the sixth, McHale allowed the first two runners to reach, but a fielder's choice and a 6-4-3 double play allowed the Mighty Macs to escape the sixth unscathed.
Kobylinski collected his second hit in the bottom of the sixth with one out, but he was thrown out trying to swipe second.
In the last of the seventh, freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (1-for-3) got the Mighty Macs' third hit of the game with a single to right-center, but Renz again got out of trouble, this time with a double play ball of his own to send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lawson singled to lead off the inning and reached second base with two outs. Senior left fielder T.J. Warner then singled through the left side, but Lawson was thrown out on a perfect strike from Nick Ortiz to keep the game 0-0 moving to the ninth inning.
Freshman Nicholas Campione surrendered the one unearned run in the tenth and senior pitcher
Joseph Caria tossed an inning and a third scoreless in relief.
In the second game, Immaculata grabbed their first lead of the day in the top of the second when freshman third baseman Robert Wallace (3-for-3, 2 R, 2B, 2 SB, RBI) hit a single down the right field line to score DiGiaimo (0-for-3, R) and give the Mighty Macs the 1-0 advantage. They added to their lead when Wallace stole home as Warner (1-for-3) was thrown out on a double steal attempt to end the second with Immaculata in front 2-0.
Centenary bounced back with their first hit and first run of the game off senior pitcher
Aaron Dietrich in the top of the third as the lead was now 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wallace laced a double to the left-center gap with two outs and was brought home when Vottero (1-for-3, RBI) singled up the middle to extend the IU advantage to 3-1 through four innings.
Dietrich continued to pitch well into the sixth when the Cyclones scored four runs which proved to be the difference in the game. Back-to-back RBI singles tied the game which also chased Dietrich from the game as Wenzler came in. There were runners on the corners with one out when Wenzler induced a fly ball to left field. It was deep enough to score the go-ahead run and a throwing error allowed the runner from first to come all the way around and make it 5-3.
The Mighty Macs were unable to push the tying run across in the sixth or seventh and fell in game two.
The Immaculata baseball team will play a non-conference game on Tuesday at York at 3:30 p.m. before getting back into CSAC play next weekend against Gwynedd-Mercy.
