Five-Run Sixth Lifts Immaculata To Win

Box Score

ABINGTON, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (9-9, 3-4 CSAC) used a five-run sixth inning to break open a one-run game en route to a 9-4 non-conference win over Penn State-Abington (9-14).  Freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (3-for-5, 2B, R) and junior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-4, HR,R) each had four RBIs to pace the offense while freshman pitcher John Ryan (1-0) earned his first career victory with three shutout innings of relief.

In the pivotal sixth inning, the Mighty Macs entered leading just 4-3.  Junior center fielder Alex Kobylinski (2-for-3, R) walked to lead off the inning before junior catcher Patrick Boulware (3-for-6, 2 R, 2B) singled to put two runners on.  The two then executed a double steal, but the next two hitters were retired.  However, Lascomb struck with a two-run single down the right field line to extend the lead to 6-3.  After freshman third baseman Robert Wallace (1-for-3, R) singled, DiGiaimo hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season to left center to break the game open and provide a 9-3 advantage.

The Nittany Lions picked up a run in the seventh, but three combined shutout innings from senior Joseph Caria and Boulware closed out the victory.

The Mighty Macs opened the scoring in the top of the first with three runs.  Lascomb and DiGiaimo each hit sacrifice flies to score runs and the third run scored by error.

Senior pitcher Aaron Dietrich got the start on the mound and surrendered two first inning runs, but kept Penn State-Abington off the board in the second to keep the 3-2 lead.  The senior struck out two in his two innings of work.

Junior John Pedorenko pitched the third and gave up one unearned run and struck out one in his only inning of work, but the Nittany Lions had tied the score at 3-3.

Immaculata got the lead back in the fifth when senior first baseman Matt Hardy (1-for-3, 2 R) scored on Lascomb's RBI double.

Ryan pitched three shutout innings while surrendering three hits and striking out one.

Junior right fielder Matt Lawson had three hits as well.

Immaculata will now have a three-game CSAC series this weekend against Centenary beginning Friday on the road at 3 p.m. before returning home for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
