Dan Whalen threw five solid innings to grab his second win of the season and junior second baseman Elijah Vottero powered the offense with three RBIs. In the game, senior first baseman
Matt Hardy stole his 23
rd base of the season to set a new Immaculata record for most in a single season and walked four times, a new single game Immaculata high.
Immaculata got on the board in the first inning with three runs to take an early 3-0 advantage. Hardy (1-for-1, R, 3 SBs, 4 BBs) walked with one out and stole second base before Vottero (2-for-5, R, 3 RBIs, SB) doubled down the left field line to bring home the first run of the game. Freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (1-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) brought home Vottero with a line drive double down the right field line to make it 2-0. Junior shortstop
Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-4, SB) then laid down a perfect bunt single down to put runners on the corners before a wild pitch brought home Lascomb for a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
After Delaware Valley shrunk the lead to one with two runs in the fourth, the Mighty Macs answered with two runs of their own to get the lead back to three. Sophomore right fielder Matthew Lawson (1-for-4, R) reached on an error and with one out, freshman catcher
Rick DiDomenico (2-for-3, 2 R, SB) moved him to third with a single to left. After Hardy was intentionally walked with two outs, Vottero came up big with a two-run single to center to push the lead to 5-2.
Whalen (2-0) went five innings surrendering five hits while giving up two runs and walking three for his second career victory.
Junior
Kirk Wenzler came on in relief in the sixth to toss a scoreless inning. In the sixth, DiDomenico led off with a single down the left field line and one out later, Hardy lined a single to right field which sent DiDomenico to third. The two then executed a double steal to make it 6-2 through six innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Aggies cut into the Mighty Mac lead with three unearned runs off freshman pitcher
John Ryan. With two outs and the bases loaded, a three-run double to the right-center gap made it 6-5 heading to the eighth.
Ryan settled down and retired the final seven hitters he faced, including three strikeouts to notch the first save of his career.
Immaculata will enter back into CSAC play for the final four games of the regular season with an outside chance of reaching the conference playoffs. They will host Keystone on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
