Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short At Marywood

BOX SCORE

SCRANTON
, Pa.- The Mighty Macs trailed Marywood 8-4 heading into the ninth inning, however Immaculata (12-16, 4-10 CSAC) scored three runs and had the tying run in scoring position, but they were unable to come all the way back as the Pacers (9-16, 2-10 CSAC) held on for the 8-7 CSAC victory.  Freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (2-for-4, R, 3 RBIs, BB) hit a bases clearing double with two outs to score all three runs in the ninth, but junior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-5, 2 RBIs, SB) went down on strikes to end the game.  Immaculata now trails Centenary by three games with five remaining for the final CSAC playoff spot.

In the top of the ninth, the first two hitters went down in order before the Mighty Macs rallied.  Sophomore right fielder Matthew Lawson (1-for-4, R, BB) doubled before back-to-back walks by senior first baseman Matt Hardy (0-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB, HBP) and junior second baseman Elijah Vottero (1-for-4, 2 R, BB) loaded the bases for Lascomb's double, but it wasn't enough to erase the early 8-3 deficit.

Immaculata got the scoring started in the top of the first with the first three runs of the game.  Hardy scored on a throwing error by the pitcher before DiGiaimo delivered a two-run single that scored Vottero and Lascomb for the early 3-0 advantage.

Marywood was ready with a response, however, as they scored four runs off junior pitcher Bryan McHale in the bottom of the first and would hold the lead the rest of the way.  The Pacers loaded the bases with one out before a bases-clearing triple and a run-scoring groundout made it 4-3 after one inning.

Marywood would add two more in the third to get their lead up to 6-3 and it would grow to as large as 8-3 in the fifth when McHale's day ended.  The junior went four and a third innings, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on nine hits while striking out two.

Junior Kirk Wenzler got out of the fifth inning jam and would throw another scoreless inning in the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Mighty Macs loaded the bases with nobody out on a single, walk, and hit batsman.  After a strikeout, Hardy hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 8-4, but that was all Immaculata would get in that inning.

After freshman Josh Pedorenko pitched a third of an inning, freshman Nicholas Campione finished the game on the mound for Immaculata.  The bullpen went three and two thirds innings of scoreless ball.

Immaculata will now have the weekend off before hosting Delaware Valley on 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
