BOX SCORE GAME 1
BOX SCORE GAME 2
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- Immaculata (11-15, 4-9 CSAC) held late leads in both games of Sunday's doubleheader, but Gwynedd-Mercy (18-10, 11-1 CSAC) mounted comebacks in both and swept the two games by scores of 13-5 and 5-4. In the first game, the Mighty Macs led 5-2 before the Griffins tied it and stormed in front with an eight run sixth inning, and in the second game, Gwynedd-Mercy erased a 4-2 deficit in the final inning to win 5-4. Junior second baseman Elijah Vottero had five hits on the day to lead the Immaculata offense.
In the opener, senior pitcher
Richard Cusic threw well for the Mighty Macs with four and a third innings giving up four hits and five runs (three earned) with five strikeouts.
After the Griffins jumped out to the 2-0 lead after two innings, Immaculata quickly tied it in the top of the third. Senior first baseman
Matt Hardy (0-for-3, 2 SB, BB) reached on a two-out walk and stole second base. He moved to third on a single by Vottero (3-for-4, R, SB) and the two of them then executed a double steal that allowed Hardy to score. When the catcher went to throw out Vottero at second, the throw sailed which allowed Vottero to come around with the tying run.
The Mighty Macs would then take the lead with two more runs in the fourth. Freshman catcher
Rick DiDomenico (1-for-3, 2B) doubled and was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt. DiDomenico would then score when Hardy reached on an error. Hardy would then advance to second on another error before an RBI single by freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (1-for-3, RBI, BB) made it 4-2 Immaculata.
In the fifth, a one-out triple by junior shortstop
Joe DiGiaimo (3-for-4, R, 3B) turned into a run when senior left fielder T.J. Warner (1-for-4, RBI) executed a squeeze play to make it 5-2 Immaculata.
After Cusic held them down for the previous two innings, the Griffins tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks, a single, and an error turned the 5-2 lead into a tie game as senior pitcher
Joseph Caria came in to get the final two outs in relief of Cusic.
After Immaculata was unable to take the lead back in the sixth, the Griffins exploded for eight runs in the sixth to put the game away. Gwynedd-Mercy sent twelve hitters to the plate as they collected five hits, three walks, and an error to take the first game 13-5.
In the second game, Immaculata came back from an early deficit before seeing their lead slip away in the last inning. Senior
Aaron Dietrich got the start on the mound and threw well for the second consecutive game. Hardy collected three hits and fell a home run short of the first cycle in Immaculata history.
After Dietrich retired the first six hitters, Immaculata took an early 1-0 lead. Hardy (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, SB) doubled with two outs and was brought home on a double by Vottero (2-for-3, RBI, SB) for the early advantage. However, Gwynedd-Mercy got their first runners and took a 2-1 lead through three innings of play.
Immaculata was ready with a response as they scored two in the fourth to go back on top 3-2. DiGiaimo (0-for-3, BB, SB) reached on an error to start the inning and stole second base. He would come around to score on junior
Billy Gaines (1-for-3, RBI) single and an RBI groundout by DiDomenico (0-for-2, BB, RBI) scored senior left fielder T.J. Warner (1-for-2, BB) to give the Mighty Macs another lead.
Dietrich continued to throw well as he retired nine straight at one point to get the game to the seventh with Immaculata leading 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, an RBI triple by Hardy gave the Mighty Macs an insurance run and a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Dietrich came out and walked the first hitter before surrendering a single which brought on freshman relief pitcher Nicholas Campione. A sacrifice fly made it 4-3 before a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out.
That's when Greg Brooks hit a hard groundball to Vottero that he was unable to handle which allowed two runs to score to give the Griffins a 5-4 victory.
Immaculata will look to snap their three-game losing skid when they host Eastern on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
