BOX SCORE
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

IMMACULATA, Pa.-
Immaculata (11-12, 4-6 CSAC) trailed Haverford (19-4) by a score of 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth when the Mighty Macs staged a four-run rally capped by a two-run walk-off single by senior first baseman Matt Hardy (3-for-5, 2 RBI) to lift Immaculata to a 7-6 non-conference win.  The Mighty Macs sent six hitters to the plate in the inning and none of them were retired on their way to the comeback victory.

The inning started with back-to-back singles off the bats of junior second baseman Elijah Vottero (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B) and senior catcher T.J. Warner (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2B) to bring the tying run to the plate.  Junior left fielder Greg Binfield (1-for-2, RBI) then delivered an RBI single to left field to score Vottero to make it 6-4.  When a reliever came in, junior Billy Gaines (0-for-1, R) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and reached safely when the pitcher's throw pulled the second baseman off the bag.

With the bases loaded, sophomore right fielder Matthew Lawson (2-for-4, 2 RBI) singled through the right side to make it 6-5.  That's when Hardy stepped up and hit a groundball through the right side that scored freshman pinch runner Michael Sciasci and Gaines with the game-winning run.  The walk-off win was the first of the season for the Mighty Macs.

Freshman Dan Whalen got the start and did well out of the gates with five strikeouts in the first two innings.

The Mighty Macs got the scoring started in the second when freshman third baseman Robert Wallace (1-for-4, R) hit a one-out single up the middle.  He moved to third base when junior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-4, SB) executed a perfect hit and run with a line drive single to right-center field.  A sacrifice fly off the bat of Vottero gave IU the 1-0 lead through two innings.

The Fords fought back with two in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead on a throwing error and an RBI double to the left-center field gap.  Haverford added to their lead in the fourth with a solo home run by Sam Kane, and they were threatening for more, but Vottero gunned down a runner at the plate to keep the deficit at 3-1.

Whalen was pulled in the fifth as he went four and two-thirds, surrendering three earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking three.  Freshman pitcher Josh Pedorenko came on in relief to finish off the fifth.

Immaculata cut into the lead in their half of the fifth with an RBI single from Warner.  His single up the middle scored Vottero who reached on a line drive double to right-center field.

In the sixth, the Mighty Macs loaded the bases with nobody out on a hit by Hardy and two hit batsman, but a strikeout, fielder's choice, and lineout ended the inning with Haverford still up 3-2.

After escaping the bases loaded no outs jam, the Fords added two insurance runs with two outs in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple and a run-scoring single.  Pedorenko surrendered two runs in two and a third innings while striking out three and walking one.

Immaculata fought back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3 through seven innings.  Lawson singled home Warner with two outs before Lawson was thrown out attempting to score on a Hardy single, which ended the inning.

Junior pitcher Kirk Wenzler (1-1) pitched the final two innings and earned the win.  He surrendered one run on a bloop single in the top of the ninth as the Mighty Macs trailed 6-3 going into their final, dramatic at bat.

Immaculata will head back into conference play with their next three games against Gwynedd-Mercy starting tomorrow at Immaculata with a 3 p.m. game with the Griffins.
