IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (7-6, 2-1 CSAC) saw their five-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Neumann (10-3, 1-0 CSAC) on Friday afternoon by a score of 5-4 in a tight conference affair. Senior starting pitcher
Richard Cusic threw all nine innings surrendering four earned runs and seven hits, while striking out seven in a strong performance.
Neumann broke the fourth tie of the game with a two-out RBI triple off the bat of Buddy Elgin in the top of the seventh to give the Knights a 5-4 lead and they held on for the CSAC win.
Neumann got on the board first in the top of the first off Cusic with a two-out RBI triple off the bat of Tyler Drinkard.
The Mighty Macs got that run back in the second inning when junior catcher
Patrick Boulware (1-for-2, R, 2 BBs) scored after a throwing error by Neumann shortstop Will Flores which tied the score after two innings.
Neumann jumped back out in front in the top of the fourth after Drinkard scored on an error to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. The Mighty Macs had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, but freshman third baseman Robert Wallace (1-for-3) was thrown out stealing at second to end the threat.
After the Knights added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, the Mighty Macs fought back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and third and two outs, senior first baseman
Matt Hardy (1-for-4, SB) hit a pop up to shallow right field that was mishandled by the second baseman which allowed junior second baseman Elijah Vottero (1-for-3, 2 R, BB) to score. Freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb (1-for-4, RBI) then hit an RBI infield single to tie the game at 3-3 heading to the sixth.
Neumann again took a brief 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth before Immaculata fought back to tie the game for the third time. This time, junior center fielder
Alex Kobylinski (1-for-5, RBI) hit a two-out RBI single through the right side to score Vottero from second base as the Mighty Macs evened the score at 4-4 through six innings of play.
Immaculata will have another shot against Neumann tomorrow when they travel to Aston for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
