IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit as its second-half push fell just short of visiting Keystone College, 69-63, on Play 4Kay and Senior Night inside Alumnae Hall.
Keystone (16-8, 10-5 Colonial States Athletic Conference) came out of the gates outscoring Immaculata, 27-9, during the first nine minutes of the contest. The Giants were 11-for-20 from the field during the stretch, and knocked down four three-pointers, including three by Tiana Cuttino.
Immaculata (8-16, 6-9) settled down during the final 8:56 of the half, cutting the Giants lead to just four (35-31) with 1:10 remaining before halftime on a 22-8 spurt. The Mighty Macs closed out the first half trailing the Giants by four, 38-34.
Mackie Fitzgerald keyed Immaculata's run with 12 points, including three treys.
The Mighty Macs connected from downtown on the opening possession of the second half trimming the Giants lead to just one (38-37), but Immaculata could not overtake Keystone. Keystone pushed its second-half lead to as large as 11, 62-51, with 5:50 left in the game.
Immaculata was able to hold Keystone scoreless during the next two minutes to trim its deficit to 62-58 with 3:35 to play. The Mighty Macs even cut the score to just three (66-63) inside one minute to play, but a 3-for-4 effort from the free throw line by Keystone was able to hold off the charging Immaculata squad.
Fitzgerald paced the Mighty Macs with 14 points, while
Lindsay Cras chipped in 11. Each played connected on three three-points, as Immaculata made eight as a team.
Chrissy Esbensen had nine points and eight assists, and
Jackie Deegler finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Brittany Merkle was Immaculata's leader on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Keystone was led by four players scoring in double figures. Valetta Richardson scored a team-high 13 points.
Prior to the start of the game, Immaculata recognized its three seniors,
Jackie Deegler,
Katie Durkin and
Chrissy Esbensen, who played in their final home contest.
The Mighty Macs are on the road Wednesday evening at Cairn for a 6 p.m. tip-off to conclude the season.
