Immaculata Extends Winning Streak With 70-61 Win Over Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – Immaculata University women's basketball extended its winning streak to four games and stayed perfect in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with its 70-61 victory on the road Saturday at Neumann University.

Immaculata improves its overall record to 6-1 while going to 3-0 in the CSAC. Neumann drops to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Junior Brittany Merkle led the Mighty Macs with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Sara Smith finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Senior Marisa Kinsey came off the bench and delivered eight points and two assists, while junior Adriana Sciascia recorded seven points and four steals.

The first half was a see-saw game that featured five lead changes and nine ties. Immaculata held its largest lead of the half (12-7) with 12:38 to play after scoring four-straight points. However, Neumann quickly retook the advantage with seven consecutive points of its own. Neumann led by no more than four points during the half.

The Mighty Macs held a slim two-point lead (30-28) after Sciascia made a jumper from a pass by Kinsey with 42 seconds left before halftime. The Knights though would send the game into halftime tied at 30-all after two made free throws with 22 ticks remaining.

Immaculata grabbed the lead coming out of halftime as Smith nailed a three-pointer, and continued to hold the advantage until Neumann scored four-straight points to knot the contest at 35-35.

A three by Lindsay Cras gave the Mighty Macs back the edge with 14:16 left in the second half, and Immaculata maintained the lead the rest of the game. The Mighty Macs grew their advantage to nine, 58-49, with 5:52 remaining before the Knights made a run to close the gap. Neumann went on an 8-2 spurt to come within three (60-57) of the Mighty Macs with just 3:32 to play in the contest.

Immaculata quickly made it a nine-point game (66-57) once again on two layups by Merkle and another bucket from Kinsey with just 1:27 left to seal the win.

Immaculata shot 50 percent from the field, going 28-for-56, including six three-pointers.

Immaculata has a week off before hosting Haverford next Saturday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m.
