ASTON, Pa.- In their first trip to the conference playoffs since 2010, the Mighty Macs (7-10-2) travelled to Neumann (10-7-1) on Monday night in a CSAC quarterfinal clash looking for an upset over the third-seeded Knights, but Neumann made two first-half goals stand up as they won 2-0 to advance to the semifinals. Immaculata entered as the sixth seed after tying their program record for wins in the CSAC season with six.
Second Team All-CSAC goalie, junior
Meghan McCurnin, was outstanding for the Mighty Macs in keeping them in the game most of the way with eight saves, including a couple diving stops to prevent the Knights from adding insurance goals.
Neumann got the scoring under way in the 23
rd minute on a goal from Emily Sanders in transition. Immaculata had a rush of their own in what would turn out to be their best opportunity of the day, when junior
Rachel Gannon ripped a shot that sailed wide that led to the ensuing rush that Sanders finished with a goal.
It appeared as if it would remain a one-goal game heading into the second half, but with 55 seconds remaining before the break, Brooke Harvey beat McCurnin on a feed from Jordyn Agresta to give Neumann the 2-0 lead at halftime.
IU tried to push up in the second half to cut into the Neumann lead as Gannon and freshman
Shelby Clare each registered shots, but the Knights defense held and Neumann advanced to the CSAC semifinals to take on the second-seeded Cabrini Cavaliers.
The Mighty Macs finished the season with seven wins overall with six coming in conference play. They advanced to their fourth CSAC postseason and earned 20 points in CSAC play to lock up the sixth seed.
