ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Immaculata University's women's basketball team began the 2013 portion of its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule Wednesday night defeating Cedar Crest College, 68-28.
The Mighty Macs were led by two scorers in double figures while 10 Immaculata players in all scored during the contest. Senior
Chrissy Esbensen led the way with a game-high 24 points, after going 6-for-8 from 3-point range, while adding four rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes of action. Senior
Katie Durkin finished with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
Sophomore
Meghan Gallagher paced Immaculata on the glass with eight rebounds while adding six points. Sophomore
Sara Smith recorded seven points, four rebounds and four steals while sophomore
Mackie Fitzgerald also had six points and three steals. Sophomore
Brittany Merkle also added five rebounds as Immaculata held a 46-30 advantage in rebounds for the contest.
Immaculata (6-8, 4-1 CSAC) was lights out from beyond the arc, shooting 9-for-13 (.692) for the contest, including a 7 of 9 effort during the first half to stake the Mighty Macs to a 42-16 lead at halftime. Immaculata knocked down five three's during the first seven minutes of the contest as Durkin and Esbensen each hit two and Fitzgerald also put in a 3-point shot as the Mighty Macs jumped out in front, 20-8.
Immaculata's defense forced 36 turnovers, which led directly to 34 points for the visitors.
Megan DeMutis led Cedar Crest (2-11, 1-4 CSAC) with nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Amber Wehry was the Falcons' leader on the boards with 11 rebounds and added eight points.
Immaculata travels to Scranton, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 12, to face Marywood University at 1 p.m.
