IMMACULATA, Pa. – Despite outscoring Cabrini College during the second half (29-26), Immaculata University was unable to upend the visiting Cavaliers, 57-46, in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening inside Alumnae Hall.
Sara Smith led the charge for the Mighty Macs (6-12, 4-5 CSAC) with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, and five rebounds.
Adriana Sciascia finished with 11 points, four steals and four rebounds.
Jackie Deegler and
Chrissy Esbensen added seven points apiece.
Brittany Merkle also came down with five rebounds for Immaculata.
After Cabrini (14-3, 10-0) took its largest lead of the game (35-20) at the 16:10 mark of the second half, Immaculata caught fire with a 24-10 run over 11:47 to trim the Cavaliers' lead to just one (45-44) with 4:23 to play in the game. Smith led the Mighty Macs' run with seven points, and Sciascia and Deegler each added five points in the spurt. Immaculata held Cabrini without a basket from the field for the first six minutes of its run to cut its deficit to five (37-32).
The Mighty Macs were limited to just one bucket from the field during the final four minutes of play as the Cavaliers finished with a 12-2 run to hold off the charging Mighty Macs. Cabrini also went 7-for-9 at the free throw line during the closing one minute, seven seconds to seal the victory.
Cabrini opened the game on a 7-0 run before Immaculata scored eight straight points to make it a 9-8 game at the 13:51 mark of the first half. Immaculata and Cabrini then traded baskets as the visitors maintained a three-to five-point lead midway through the opening half. It wasn't until the 7:17 mark that the Cavaliers held a double-figure advantage, and the 31-17 halftime lead for Cabrini was its largest of the half.
Brittany Sandone led Cabrini with a game-high 19 points, while teammates Annie Rivituso had 14 points and Amber Keys had 10.
Immaculata continues its home stand on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. hosting Cedar Crest College.
