SCRANTON, Pa.- Immaculata University shut out the Pacers 4-0 in the opening game of a Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader but the Pacers used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the Mighty Macs 9-7 in the nightcap as Marywood and the Mighty Macs split two games Sunday afternoon in Scranton.
In the opener, Bryan McHale (1-1) threw a complete-game and only allowed three hits while striking out nine batters for the shutout win.
The Mighy Macs (5-10, 2-4 CSAC) used three singles in the sixth from Matt Hardy, Brett Knazek, and Joe DiGiaimo to break open the scoreless game. Billy Gaines scored on a balk in the seventh to close out the scoring for the Mighty Macs.
The Pacers (13-16, 5-1 CSAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third and Immaculata responded with three in the fourth to cut the lead, 5-3. Marywood exploded with four runs in the fourth to keep the game out of reach.
The Mighty Macs attempted a rally in the fifth with a single run from Matt Bolden, followed by a two-run homerun from Matt Hardy in the sixth, and another homer from Alex Kobylinski in the seventh but Immaculata's comeback was not enough to knock off the Pacers.
Eli Vottero and Matt Hardy finished 3-for-5 at the plate and Hardy finished with a team-high four RBIs. Matt Bolden, Joe Knazek, and Greg Binfield registered two hits each.
Immaculata returns home on Tuesday, March 27 and hosts Keuka in non-leauge action at 3:30 p.m.
