IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's women's basketball team posted three players in double-digit scoring as the host Mighty Macs defeated Cairn University, 66-34, on Monday night at Alumnae Hall.
The Mighty Macs improved to 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and 3-3 overall after the victory. The Highlanders dropped to 0-5, 0-2 CSAC.
Sara Smith led the trio of Immaculata scorers with 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field.
Mackie Fitzgerald poured in 15 points and five steals, while
Chrissy Esbensen had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Katie Durkin led the hosts on the glass bringing down seven rebounds.
Meghan Gallagher added four steals, and
Marisa Kinsey made three assists.
A three-pointer to open the game was the only lead for Cairn all night. Immaculata held just a slim two-point advantage (8-6) with 14:24 remaining in the first half, when the Mighty Macs held the Highlanders without a bucket for over seven minutes while scoring 12 points of their own.
Cairn finally ended the scoreless stretch with a basket at the 6:54 mark before halftime to cut the Mighty Macs lead to 20-8. However, the final 5:41 of the first half again saw Immaculata on a scoring stretch of 17-4. The Mighty Macs took their largest lead of the first half into the locker room at the break, 37-12.
Immaculata led by as many as 38 points during the second half, the final time coming with just 3:45 remaining in the contest, 64-26.
Immaculata was able to control the boards, especially limiting Cairn's offensive rebounds. The Mighty Macs led the Highlanders 43-25 in rebounds, and Cairn had just five offensive grabs compared to Immaculata's 24 on the defensive boards. Immaculata also forced 26 turnovers by Cairn which led to 30 points by the Mighty Macs.
Hannah McCardle had a game-high 21 points for Cairn, including 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Ruth Nelson posted seven points and a team-best six rebounds.
Immaculata is back in action on Wednesday travelling to Cabrini at 6 p.m. for a CSAC contest with the Cavaliers.
