FROSTBURG, Md. – Immaculata University's women's basketball team fell to host Frostburg State, 56-49, on Saturday afternoon in the Jim Crawley Tournament.
Chrissy Esbensen, who was selected to the all-tournament team, poured in a team-high 15 points for the Mighty Macs and added six rebounds.
Sara Smith finished with her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while having four steals.
Katie Durkin also amassed 10 rebounds while chipping in six points.
Jackie Deegler finished with eight points and seven rebounds, and
Alison Zimny totaled eight points and five rebounds.
The game was a nail-biter during the first half with six lead changes and seven ties. The most either team lead by during the first half was just three points. The Mighty Macs were the first to lead by three (7-4) with seven minutes into the frame after Zimny knocked down two free throws. Frostburg State quickly tied the game with a three-pointer.
After Frostburg State took a three-point edge, 16-13, with 4:05 to play in the opening half, Immaculata scored six straight points to stake the Mighty Macs to that same lead with 2:58 remaining in the period.
The Bobcats eventually took a one-point lead into halftime, 21-20.
The second half was more of a back-and-forth affair with six more tied scores and 12 lead changes. The Mighty Macs again led by three (26-23) at the 16:36 mark after beginning the second half on a 6-2 spurt. However, the two teams continued to trade baskets and the lead.
Immaculata took its largest advantage of the contest with 11:08 to play, 37-32, scoring six-straight points, the last four points by Smith. It was not enough to hold Frostburg State at bay, though.
With just 2:58 to play in the game, Esbensen sunk a pair of free throws for the Mighty Macs to give the visitors a one-point edge, 48-47. As the game went down to the wire, Ronje' James made a layup and Elaina Hummel connected on a trey to give Frostburg State a 52-48 lead with 1:12 to play.
Frostburg State iced the game with a 4-for-4 performance from the foul line during the final minute.
Elaina Hummel led Frostburg State (1-1) with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Immaculata (0-2) opens the home schedule on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. hosting Alvernia.
