READING, Pa.- Immaculata University placed three players in double figures as the Mighty Macs' women's basketball team was defeated on the road by Alvernia, 70-56, in a non-conference tilt on Monday night.
Bridget Welz led all scorers with 16 points and six rebounds, while Kelly Brown contributed 13 points and six boards. Chrissy Esbensen totaled 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
The Mighty Macs played the Crusaders tight during the first 10 minutes of the contest as the lead see-sawed back and forth and was tied five times. Immaculata tied the score, 17-17, on a jumper from Welz with 8:37 remaining in the first half. In the next possession, a three-pointer from Katie Durkin's fueled a 15-8 run as the Mighty Macs held a 32-29 advantage at halftime.
The Crusaders (8-8) regained the lead five minutes into the second half as the Mighty Macs trailed by five points, 40-35. Immaculata pulled within one, 45-44, when Welz drained a three- pointer with 12 minutes remaining in the game but Alvernia responded with back-to-back three-pointers which sparked a 10-8 run and led as many as 10 points at the 3:11 minute mark. Alvernia would close out the game going 7-for-7 from the free throw line to claim the win.
Kelli McIntyre led the Crusaders with 24 points while Angela Altemose netted 17 points and seven boards. Kelsey Gill registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Immaculata (8-9, 6-2) returns to CSAC action at Cabrini on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. against the Cavaliers.
