GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa- The Immaculata University baseball team topped Gwynedd-Mercy College in 10 innings, 12-11, in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs on Wednesday afternoon.
Richard Cusic pitched the final two innings to earn the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out one batter.
John Pedorenko pitched 7.1 innings surrendering three runs on nine hits in the victory.
Gwynedd-Mercy (16-15, 12-6) scored six runs in the bottom of the first to break the game open early. Immaculata answered opening the third inning with a two-run homer by
Matt Hardy.
Eli Vottero and Dave News also scored in the third inning on two errors to cut the lead 6-5.
The Griffins tallied a single run in the bottom of the third but the Mighty Macs would take advantage of a pair of errors in the fourth and fifth innings by adding two runs. News's unearned run in the fifth tied the game, 7-7.
Eli Vottero's run in the top half of the seventh put Immaculata (19-13, 11-7) in the lead which was followed by Pat Boulware's unearned run to make the score, 9-7. Gwynedd-Mercy's John Burns homered to left field to in the bottom of the seventh to keep it a close game but Immaculata would hold the lead with two runs scored in the top half of the eighth inning.
The Griffins pushed across three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, 11-11. In the tenth inning,
Eli Vottero singled to left field that scored
Matt Hardy to give Immaculata the 12-11 advantage to win the game.
Joe DiGiaimo went 2-for-6, scoring two runs while
Rick Gehman finished 2-for-5 at the plate tallying one run. Hardy led the team with four RBI and went 2-for-4 scoring three runs. Vottero finished with three hits and one RBI as the Mighty Macs scattered 12 hits during the game.
Immaculata will face Keystone College in the next round of the CSAC tournament at 11 a.m. on Friday at Bear Stadium.
