Gwynedd-Mercy Tops Baseball In Series Finale

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.
– Immaculata University's baseball squad finished the season series with Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday afternoon suffering an 11-4 loss to the host Griffins in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game.

Matt Bolden and Eli Vottero each picked up two hits and had one RBI apiece to lead an eight-hit effort for the Mighty Macs. Matt Hardy had one hit and one RBI, while Dave News, Joe Rawlings and Rick Gehman collected one hit each.

Gwynedd-Mercy (5-7, 3-0 CSAC) pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the first as the Griffins loaded the bases to start the inning. Immaculata was able to turn a double play to get out of the jam, and only allow that one run to score.

Immaculata (3-9, 0-3 CSAC) took the lead in the top half of the third plating three runners. Gehman walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Patrick Boulware's sacrifice bunt. Following News' walk, Joe DiGiaimo was able to reach on an error and Gehman came around to score, but News was out in a run-down. Hardy and Rawlings then had back-to-back walks to load the bases for the Mighty Macs, and set up Bolden's RBI single. The bases remained full of Immaculata runners as Vottero stepped to the plate and delivered a RBI single of his own, but that was all the damage the Mighty Macs could do.

Gwynedd-Mercy answered quickly with nine runs in its half of the third off six hits that included two extra-base hits.

Immaculata was able to get one run back in the fourth as both News and DiGiaimo walked to enable News to score on Hardy's run-producing single.

The Griffins scored one more run in the fifth, and the squads played scoreless baseball for the final four innings.

Aaron Dietrich started on the mound for Immaculata going four innings. He gave up eight hits and allowed 11 runs, only one of which was earned. Richard Cusic pitched two innings in relief allowing just one hit and striking out two batter. Kirk Wenzler, making his first appearance this season, and Aaron Hass each pitched one inning with no hits.

Greg Brooks went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one driven in for Gwynedd-Mercy. Austin Ley also had a multi-hit day for the Griffins with two hits and two RBI. Gwynedd-Mercy starter R.J. Finizio went five innings to earn the win. He allowed six hits, four runs, three earned, walked five and struck out four.

Immaculata hosts Penn State Harrisburg for a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
