Baseball Falls In Season Opener to Methodist

Methodist handed Immaculata a 14-1 season-opening defeat as the Mighty Macs kicked off the 2011 season on Tuesday afternoon.

Immaculata scored its run in the top half of the sixth inning as Matt Hardy hit a solo home run.

Bryan McHale started on the mound for Immaculata and went 4.0 innings. He allowed seven runs, six earned, and struck out three. Richard Cusic came in for McHale and pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Joseph Caria, Andrew McCoy, Alex Kobylinksi and John Pedorenko finished in relief for the Mighty Macs. 

Hardy led the four-hit effort for the Mighty Macs with two hits. Kevin Bertholf and Billy Gaines each picked up their first collegiate hit on singles in the eighth.

Brett Bially picked up the win, pitching three scoreless innings allowing just one hits while striking out four for the Monarchs. 

Methodist, which jumped out in front with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, continued to extend its lead during its final four times at bat. The Monarchs added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but finished with three runs in each the seventh and eighth innings for the 14-1 win. 

Immaculata will play at Guilford College tomorrow afternoon for its second game of their Spring Trip. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
