IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's women's lacrosse team lost its season opener on Saturday afternoon, 10-8, to visiting Widener University.
Immaculata was led by Kacie O'Neill's three goals, and Rebecca Whiteman and Lauren Bigos each scored twice. Allison Salvo provided the Mighty Macs' other tally. Chelsey Murta tallied two assists.
Britt Worthington, Emily Hallett and Alysia Remaley all grabbed four ground balls, and O'Neill caused three Widener turnovers. Worthington played all 60 minutes in goal for Immaculata, making 10 saves.
Widener scored the first three goals, but Immaculata scored back-to-back goals less than four minutes apart to cut the Pride's advantage to 3-2 midway through the first half. The Pride went back ahead by three goals (5-2) before Salvo and Whiteman netted goals during the final five minutes of the first half to keep the Mighty Macs within one (5-4) with 2:19 left.
However, Widener netted a goal with 40 seconds left in the half to hold the 6-4 lead at halftime.
The Pride came out in the second half and scored twice during the first four minutes to up its advantage to 8-4.
O'Neill scored at the 21:12 mark of the second half, and Widener answered with a goal less than one minute later. The Mighty Macs scored three times during a four-minute stretch to close within 9-8 with 14:49 remaining in the contest. But, the Pride scored an insurance goal with 13:38 left, and neither squad found the back of the net the rest of the way.
Rachel Porter tallied five goals to pace the Pride. Calina Walz scored two goals, and Julia Costello racked up one goal and two assists. Widener goalkeeper Linda Salcedo made six saves in the win.
Immaculata returns to action on March 8 at 4 p.m. hosting Rutgers-Camden.
