IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University women's basketball team has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2011 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament, which is set to get under way on Monday, Feb. 21, and will host a quarterfinal round contest at Alumnae Hall on Monday evening at 7 p.m.
The Mighty Macs (17-8, 12-4 CSAC) will take on the sixth-seeded Centenary College Cyclones (13-11, 10-6 CSAC) as they look for their second victory against Centenary this season, following its 99-75 win during the regular season at Alumnae Hall.
Immaculata is making its second-straight postseason appearance and its fifth trip to the playoffs in the last eight seasons. It marks the first home playoff game for the Mighty Macs since the 2006 conference tournament in which Immaculata also earned the third seed in the postseason. During the 2010 CSAC Tournament, Immaculata was the sixth seed and traveled to No. 3 Marywood for its quarterfinal contest where the Mighty Macs defeated the Pacers, 61-48. Immaculata was then defeated by top-seeded and eventual CSAC champion Neumann in the semifinals.
The Mighty Macs are led by two players averaging double-figures in points this season in
Chelsea McTigue (16.3) and
Chrissy Esbensen (13.1).
Leah Kuczynski is the squad's leader both on the glass with 6.9 rebounds per outing and in blocked shots (30). Esbensen leads the Mighty Macs in both assists (4.7) and steals (2.6) per game.
Monday's contest will the first time Immaculata has squared off against Centenary in the conference postseason tournament. This marks the fourth straight season that Centenary has qualified for the conference's postseason tournament, but the first time it will be the sixth seed. Centenary was the fifth seed in the 2010 CSAC Tournament last season, advancing to the semifinals. In both 2009 and 2008, the Cyclones lost in the quarterfinals as the No. 3 and 5 seed, respectively.
Tickets for the Colonial States Athletic Conference Quarterfinal can be purchased at the door to the Alumnae Hall gymnasium for $5. Immaculata University students get in free with a valid student ID. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is hoping to “White Out” Alumnae Hall on Monday, so be sure to wear white when you come to the game!
In the league's other quarterfinal game on Monday evening, No. 4 Gwynedd-Mercy will host No. 5-seed Baptist Bible at 7 p.m.
The winner of Monday's contest will travel to either top-seeded Neumann or second-place finisher Marywood for the CSAC semifinals on Wednesday, February 23 at 7 p.m. The Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship Game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the highest remaining seed. The winner of that championship game receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
