IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day at Alumnae Hall with a 75-63 win against rival Gwynedd-Mercy College.
Immaculata improved to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the CSAC with the win, and it marked the Mighty Macs' third straight victory against the Griffins. Gwynedd-Mercy now sits at 14-8 overall, 10-4 CSAC. The Mighty Macs hold the tie-breaker against the Griffins in any playoff scenario with their sweep this season.
Immaculata's Chrissy Esbensen broke out with 21 points, six assists and six rebounds to lead the team. Bridget Welz added 17 points and six rebounds, while Leah Kuczynski chipped in 12 points and six rebounds. Chelsea McTigue poured in 11 points and five rebounds in her final regular-season home contest.
The Mighty Macs led the whole way as they opened the game with six straight points. The Griffins chipped away at the lead, and eventually got within one (9-8) with 12:15 to play in the first half.
It took Immaculata less than six minutes to expand its advantage to double figures, 22-11, and with the exception of Nicole Dougherty's layup at the 5:02 mark, it would remain double digits the rest of the way.
The Mighty Macs led 36-24 at the break, going 12-for-14 from the foul line. Immaculata also forced 14 Gwynedd-Mercy turnovers which led to nine points.
Immaculata's lead ballooned twice to as many as 27, the last with 10:43 to play as Kelly Brown knocked down two free throws for the 62-35 lead. Immaculata maintained a 26-point edge (72-46) with 5:12 left when Gwynedd-Mercy went to a 15-1 spurt that cut the Mighty Macs' lead to just 12 (73-61) with 1:26 left. However, the Griffins could get no closer.
Dougherty finished with 16 points for Gwynedd-Mercy, while Stacey Judge chipped in 15 points.
Immaculata travels to Keystone on Monday night at 6 p.m. as it begins the final week of regular-season conference play.
