Immaculata Women Fall To Elizabethtown, 71-70

– Elizabethtown's Taylor Kreider had a layup with 16 seconds left in the game to lift the Blue Jays to a 71-70 win against Immaculata University women's basketball at the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
 
Immaculata's Chrissy Esbensen poured in a game-high 23 points as she went 10-for-15 from the field. Leah Kuczynski recorded her second-straight double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Kuczynski also had five blocks and two steals. Bridget Welz finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Kelly Brown also registered 11 points and six rebounds.
 
Down by seven, 70-63, with 1:46 remaining in the game, Elizabethtown had three-point baskets from Katy Fogel on consecutive trips down the court to cut the Immaculata lead to one, 70-69, with 1:15 left. Kreider went up for a layup with 16 seconds to play to put the Blue Jays ahead, 71-70, and Immaculata was not able to answer with a bucket at the other end.
 
Elizabethtown also had four players in double figures in the scoring column. Kreider led the way with 13 points while Jayci Scannapieco and Stephanie Ellwood each had 12 points. Kendra Beittel finished with 11 points. The Blue Jays went 10 of 23 from three-point range, and Ellwood was 4-for-8 from behind the arc.
 
The first half was a series of runs for each squad that featured two ties and five lead changes. Ellwood started the game with a three pointer for Elizabethtown, and Scannapieco would sink another three at the 16:54 mark to put the Blue Jays ahead, 6-5.
 
Immaculata reclaimed the lead (7-6) on a Kuczynski layup at the 15:54 mark, and the Mighty Macs would push that advantage to nine, 21-12, with 12:08 to play in the opening half. The Blue Jays came back with a spurt of their own, 14-0, over 4:15 to pull ahead of the Mighty Macs, 26-21, with 7:53 remaining in the first half.
 
Esbensen and Kuczynski led Immaculata on a 7-0 run to take the edge back from Elizabethtown, 28-26, with 5:29 left, and despite two layups by the Blue Jays to knot the score, the Mighty Macs never gave the lead back. Immaculata eventually held a 38-34 advantage at halftime.
 
Immaculata continued to maintain its lead, pushing the advantage to eight (49-41) with 13:58 left in the contest. With the Mighty Macs leading, 51-44, the Blue Jays went on a 10-4 run in just under four minutes to cut their deficit to just one, 55-54, with 9:03 to play.
 
Elizabethtown eventually tied the game at 57-all, but Immaculata was able to make shots when it needed to hold a seven-point lead, 70-63, with 1:46 left in the game.
 
Immaculata will play in the tournament consolation game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against either York (Pa.) or Franklin & Marshall.
