IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's women's basketball team escaped with a 71-67 win against visiting Haverford on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall in non-conference action.
The Fords drew to within one (67-66) with 1:13 to play, but a
Chrissy Esbensen layup just inside one minute and two clutch free throws by
Kelly Brown with seven seconds remaining, propelled the Mighty Macs to the victory.
Brown led Immaculata in scoring with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks. She scored nine points during the second half, seven coming at the foul line, and Brown finished the game 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Chelsea McTigue poured in 14 points and seven rebounds, while
Rachel Denis added 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Esbensen finished the afternoon with 11 points, three assists and two steals.
Leah Kuczynski led the Mighty Macs on the boards with 11 rebounds while chipping in six points, three assists and two blocked shots.
Immaculata, which led by seven at halftime, 39-32, saw its lead quickly erased as Haverford came out on a 9-2 run during the first three minutes of the second half to tie things up at 41-all. The Mighty Macs never trailed in the second half, but they weren't able to put the Fords away.
The Mighty Macs led by as many as seven during the second stanza, but every time the Fords came back with an answer. Immaculata was ahead by seven, 66-59, with 3:40 to play when Haverford went on a 7-1 run to come within one (67-66). It was the closest the Fords had been to the Mighty Macs since trailing by one (44-43) at the 14:20 mark of the second half.
Haverford also placed four players in double figures, led by Nina Voith's 20 points. Dominique Meeks finished with a double-double on 16 points and 16 rebounds, while adding three assists and three steals. Victoria Sobocinski had 15 points, which included three three-pointers, and Calla Miller chipped in 11.
Immaculata heads back into conference play on Monday evening, Jan. 10, traveling to Baptist Bible for a 6 p.m. tilt with the Crusaders.
