SCRANTON, Pa. – Visiting Immaculata University was defeated by the University of Scranton, 3-0, on Thursday night in a non-league field hockey contest.
The Mighty Macs (0-5) held the Royals (3-2) off the scoreboard for the first 21 minutes of the game as Immaculata goalkeeper Britt Worthington made eight key saves and Anna Gilbert had a defensive stop. Scranton was finally able to beat the Immaculata defense at the 21:04 mark of the game as Gretchen Kempf connected with Alicia Tamboia and Tamboia deposited the ball into the cage.
Kaitlyn Tirney made 2-0 in favor of the Royals with 1:39 to play before halftime. Just 3:37 into the second half, Scranton added its final tally as Laura Megargel scored her first goal of the season.
Worthington finished the contest with 14 saves, and Scranton goalkeeper Alexandria Marandino needed to make just one save.
Immaculata begins the Colonial States Athletic Conference portion of the schedule on Saturday as it heads to Gwynedd-Mercy for a 1 p.m. contest.
