Final Seconds Lift Gwynedd-Mercy Past Men's Lacrosse

IMMACULATA, Pa.
- Gwynedd-Mercy College's Nicholas Hummel used a deflection to slip the ball into the net with 9.1 seconds left, lifting the visiting Griffins to a 10-9 victory over host Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.

Gwynedd-Mercy (7-4, 2-2 CSAC) used a three-goal run spanning the third and fourth quarters to tie the contest at 7-all with 10:19 to play. Brendan Dinneen gave the Mighty Macs the go-ahead score off a pass from John Cacchio with 6:11 left, but Gwynedd-Mercy answered less than one minute later, knotting things at 8-8.

John Cacchio scored on a flick from Dante Tuscai with 2:24 remaining in the game to put Immaculata back on top, 9-8. However, the Griffins answered the call again as Mason Risner shot one into the net with 1:33 to play.

It appeared the contest was headed to overtime when Hummel tallied the deciding goal with just 9.1 seconds left.

Immaculata (7-5, 2-3 CSAC) never trailed until the end. The Mighty Macs used a three-goal spurt to start the second half to break a 4-4 halftime score, and put them ahead by their largest margin (7-4).

Cacchio tallied four goals and added two assists for the Mighty Macs. Ben Tuscai registered one goals and assisted on three others for four points. Dante Tusai had two assists and Joe Keller had one goal and one assist. Dinneen, Tom Hartney and Tim Flanigan all recorded one goal apiece.

Mighty Macs goalkeeper Andrew Sim made 11 saves in the loss.

For the Griffins, Matt Houk, Stefan Hetland and Mason Risner all recorded two goals and one assist to pace the offense. Gwynedd-Mercy keeper Richard Zagari made eight stops in the win.

Immaculata plays at Neumann on Saturday April 24 in its CSAC finale. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
