WINCHESTER, Va. – Immaculata University's baseball squad suffered an 18-3 setback against No. 8/20 Shenandoah University in the conclusion of its spring trip on Friday afternoon.
Immaculata (0-4) scored three runs on four hits and trailed just 6-0 entering the top half of the six inning.
Matt Hardy went 1-for-4, scored one run and drove in two while
Joe Rawlings was 1-for-3 with the other RBI.
The Mighty Macs'
Chris Dickinson led off the top of the sixth with a walk and stole second. The Hornets' then walked
David News and
Rick Gehman singled to load the bases for Hardy. Hardy drove the ball down the left field line for a double that scored Dickinson and News, and Hardy advanced to third as Gehman was out at the plate. Rawlings then singled to left which plated Hardy to cap a three-run inning for Immaculata.
Shenandoah (5-3) came back with five runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh and five in the eighth to put the game out of reach for Immaculata.
Andrew Dietrich (0-1) lasted 5.1 innings. He allowed seven earned runs on seven hits. He walked six and struck out two. Dietrich was one of four pitchers that the Mighty Macs sent to the mound.
Andrew McCoy and
Ernell Harley Jr. finished out the six for Dietrich, and
Andrew Ellis pitched the final two innings.
Shenandoah's Kevin Brashears, Jon Holcomb, Jesse Henry, Greg Van Sickler and Corey Nelson all collected two hits, while one of Henry's two hits was a three-run homer. Vince Claudio (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Hornets. He started and went 5.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked four.
Immaculata is back in action Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Widener.
