READING, Pa. - Immaculata University's baseball team earned a split with Penn State Berks on Wednesday afternoon. The Mighty Macs started the doubleheader by winning the opener, 13-4, before dropping game two to the Nittany Lions, 13-6.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, Immaculata finally broke through with its first hit of the game, but not before four straight Immaculata batters walked to plate the Mighty Macs first run as
Rick Gehman's walked brought
Kris Hazlett home.
Matt Hardy then hit a two-RBI single to score
Brandon Seibert and Ernell Harley. The Mighty Macs capped their four-run inning with
Joe Rawlings RBI single that sent Gehman home.
Immaculata extended its lead to 10-3 after putting six runs on the board in the top half of the sixth as the Mighty Macs sent 10 batters to the plate after the first eight up reached base. Seibert came up with the bases loaded and hit a two-RBI double to left that cleared the bases after the Nittany Lions committed two errors on the play. Hardy and Rawlings singled to end the string of eight batters, and Rawlings' hit scored Hardy.
The Mighty Macs added three more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win. Harley walked for the second time and Seibert singled to set up
Patrick Boulware's double that scored both runners. Boulware later scored as Hardy reached on an error.
Penn State Berks came back with one run in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to overcome Immaculata's strong three final innings.
Kevin Leitzel started for Immaculata and earned his first win of the season. He lasted four innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Andrew Ellis came in and pitched the final three innings for the Mighty Macs to pick up his first save. He allowed no earned runs, two hits, walked three and struck out two.
Jazz Hendrick took the loss on the mound for Penn State Berks after lasting 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits. He walked six and struck out six.
In game two, Immaculata struck early with one run in the first as Gehman, who had walked, scored on Rawlings' fielder's choice that eliminated Boulware at second.
The Nittany Lions tied the score at 1-all in the bottom half of the second as they got one run on two hits.
The Mighty Macs took the lead back in the third with one run and pushed their advantage to 3-1 with one more run in the top of the fourth. Rawlings had a RBI double in the third and Hardy had a RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Penn State Berks scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Nittany Lions' a one-run lead, but the Mighty Macs tied the score at 4-4 as they added one more run in the top of the fifth. Penn State Berks came back with three runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth to lead 13-4. Immaculata plated two more runs in the top of the seventh but was unable to come back from the deficit.
Andrew Dietrich lasted 4.1 innings for Immaculata on the mound in the loss. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits.
Andrew McCoy came on for the final 1.2 innings. He gave up three hits that produced three earned runs.
Jerel Elliot got the win for Penn State Berks after pitching six innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs.
Immaculata will be at Lancaster Bible on Friday for a doubleheader at Stumpf Field beginning at 12 p.m.
