Immaculata Women Come Up Short At Neumann, 79-75

ASTON, Pa. Chrissy Esbensen led four Immaculata players in double figures with 20 points but Neumann nailed four free throws in the closing seconds as the host Knights hung on for the 79-75 win against the visiting Mighty Macs on Thursday night in CSAC action.

Immaculata falls to 14-9 overall and 9-6 in the CSAC while Neumann improves to 18-5 and 14-1 in the league.

Esbensen's pair of free throws with 4.1 seconds left tied the game at 75-all. However, Brittany Whetts sank four foul shots the rest of the way as the Knights stole the win in the end.

Rachel Denis buried a 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining that put Immaculata up, 73-71. Neumann's Nicole Feby answered with a three-ball of her own with 12 ticks left on the clock and was fouled on the play. She nailed the free throw to put the Knights up two, setting the stage for Esbensen's foul shots when she was hit underneath on Immaculata's next possession.

Neumann held a six-point lead (61-55) with 8:55 remaining in the game when Immaculata went on an 8-0 run, which included a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line, that put the Mighty Macs up, 63-61 at 4:55. The two sides see-sawed back and forth over the next three minutes until Denis' 3-pointer put the visitors up by two.

Leah Kuczynski registered a double-double with 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Kelly Brown finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Bridget Welz had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Immaculata shot 50 percent for the game (26-for-52) and 75 percent from the foul line (21 of 28). Neumann recovered from a poor-shooting effort in the first half (9 of 30, 30 percent) by knocking down 17 of 36 shots (47.2 percent) in the second half and putting up 49 points.

Whetts poured in 39 points for Neumann after going 13 of 21 from the field and 13-for-16 from the foul line. Feby added 11 points for the Knights.

Immaculata plays its regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 20 as it hosts Gwynedd-Mercy at Alumnae Hall at 1 p.m.
