HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - Immaculata University's women's soccer team saw its magical season come to an end on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon, falling to Centenary College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament championship game in a penalty kick shootout.
Centenary opened the game scoring in the fifth minute of the first half, and Immaculata tallied its marker during the first five minutes of the second half. Regulation and two overtime periods was not enough to break the 1-1 tie, and both squads headed to penalty kicks for the second time in as many games.
Centenary went first in the shootout and Immaculata's
Jessica Gaburo made a diving one-handed save on the first shot from Jen Dexter. The Mighty Macs (8-10-3) followed with
Kim Steinke depositing the ball in the right-center for the early 1-0 edge.
Caitlin Veverka tied the scored at 1-1 when she scored in the left corner, but
Robin Valerio gave Immaculata back the advantage as she buried the ball in the upper left corner. Centenary again evened the score at 2-all on Jazmine Farrell's goal.
Centenary took its first lead of the shootout as Brittamy Overland started out the fourth set netting a goal. However,
Stefanie Karmondy responded for the Mighty Macs with a shot to the upper left corner, and things were tied at 3-3 heading into the final set of shooters in the opening round.
Centenary's Courtney Flanagan pushed her shot into the lower left pocket, and Cyclones' goalkeeper Ashley Denti came up with the save on Immaculata's kick to seal the 4-3 shootout win.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Valerio put a pass up through the middle for a waiting
Bridget Cunningham, who made a move to her right around a Centenary defender and buried the ball into the left corner for the equalizing goal in the 50th minute.
Farrell scored Centenary's goal in the fifth minute of the match. Denti finished the game with five saves, and also had two in the shootout.
Gaburo made nine saves for the Mighty Macs, who were outshot by the Cyclones 28-12.
It's the first CSAC women's soccer title for Centenary (13-7-2), and the Lady Cyclones will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Centenary will find out its first round opponent when the field is announced on Monday.
