ASTON, Pa. – Immaculata University held Neumann University scoreless over the last four minutes of the game but the host Knights hung on for the 58-55 win against the visiting Mighty Macs on Monday night in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's basketball opener for both teams.
The Mighty Macs (3-2, 0-1 CSAC) were down by one, 52-51, with 5:05 left to play but Neumann's (3-3, 1-0) Erica Marvel hit back-to-back three pointers to put Neumann up, 58-51.
Esbensen's pair of free throws with 1:16 left pulled Immaculata within four, 58-54. Neumann tried to answer with a layup but came up short. Immaculata's
Chelsea McTigue drew the foul at the other end and was sent to the line hitting her first free throw, 58-55, with 44 seconds left on the clock.
Immaculata had a chance to tie the score in the final moments of the game with the final possession needing a three pointer, but both Mighty Mac trey attempts came up empty.
Rachel Denis led the Mighty Macs with 14 points and had five rebounds and three steals.
Chelsea McTigue netted 11 points, while
Chrissy Esbensen chipped in 10 points, four assists and three steals.
Bridget Welz paced Immaculata on the boards with 10 rebounds, and
Leah Kuczynski had nine rebounds.
In the first half, Neumann started strong and built an 8-0 lead. The teams then battled back and forth, and the Knights went into halftime up by two, 31-29.
Katie Young recorded a double-double for Neumann with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Erica Marvel also had 15 points in the win for the Knights, hitting five three-pointers.
Immaculata will travel to Cedar Crest on Thursday for a conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
