Second Half Leads Immaculata Women Past Penn State Berks, 74-71

- Chelsea McTigue poured in 18 of her 24 points during the second half to spur the Immaculata University women's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory in its lid lifter against Penn State Berks on Wednesday evening, 74-71.

 

McTigue was the contest's only player to finish with a double-double as she registered game-highs with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Three other Mighty Macs chipped in with double figures in points as Bridget Welz led the trio with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Leah Kuczynski finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals while Chrissy Esbensen added 10 points and a team-leading six assists.

 

Immaculata trailed by double figures (66-56) with just 3:29 to play but when on a 10-3 run to trim the deficit to 69-66 in just 1:10. Esbensen started the spurt with a jumper inside the lane, and McTigue followed with eight points on two three-point plays after being fouled on her made layups and another layup off Esbensen's steal.

 

The Mighty Macs took their first lead since 6:35 left in the first half when Welz nailed back-to-back three pointers with just 52 ticks remaining in the game, putting Immaculata head, 72-71. In a last attempt to retake the lead, the Nittany Lions began to foul, but Esbensen sunk both free throws with 38 seconds on the clock for the final margin.

 

Penn State Berks led 41-31 at halftime as Kellie Wilson hit a three at the buzzer to put the Nittany Lions up by double digits.

 

Steph Binder was the Nittany Lions' leading scorer with 23 points, and both Jasmine Harris-Kane and Taylor Kreider added 14 points. Dorian Bishop led Penn State Berks on the glass with 12 rebounds.

 

Immaculata heads to the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday taking on Shenandoah at 8 p.m. The Mighty Macs will face either Misericordia or Swarthmore on Sunday afternoon.
