ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Immaculata captured its first win this season by defeating Cedar Crest, 9-8, on Tuesday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse contest.
Rebecca Whiteman amassed a team-best eight points on six goals and two assists.
Kacie O'Neill recorded one goal and two assists.
Kelly Kugler and
Emily Hallett each posted one goal while
Rachel Coyle netted one assist.
Whiteman led off the scoring with a free-position goal 3:59 into the contest, and scored unassisted just 37 seconds later, giving Immaculata the early 2-0 advantage. Kugler tallied her first goal of the season off a Whiteman fee with 22:03 remaining in the first half, putting the Mighty Macs ahead 3-0 on the Falcons.
Cedar Crest scored at the 17:43 mark as Thersia Ault beat Immaculata keeper Brittany Worthington on the free-position shot. Hallett and O'Neill each scored a little over three minutes apart, giving Immaculata a four-goal cushion.
The Falcons had the momentum at the end of the half with three straight goals during the final 3:47, including two tallies from Amanda Dombroski. Immaculata led just 5-4 at intermission.
Whiteman found the back of the net 1:50 into the second half, increasing Immaculata's lead to 6-4, but Jesenia Holguin cut it back to one goal when she scored for Cedar Crest at the 25:28 mark.
Whiteman then rattled off three consecutive goals in less than two minutes, giving the Mighty Macs what proved to be the game winner.
Cedar Crest came close to tying the contest with the game's final three goals, but after the free-position tally with 4:35 remaining, the Falcons could not score the equalizer.
Worthington picked up the win in the net making eight saves. Devin Ursini suffered the loss for Cedar Crest, also recording eight saves.
Immaculata's defense in front of the cage was led by
Anastasia Likanchuk's six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Alysia Remaley also caused two turnovers and picked up five loose balls while
Jenn Norris collected four ground balls.
Dombroski and Holguin each registered two goals to lead the Falcons.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday, April 15, when it travels to Cabrini for a 4 p.m. draw against the Cavaliers.
