IMMACULATA, Pa. – Spurred by Chelsea McTigue's 26 points, the Immaculata University women's basketball team defeated visiting Cedar Crest College on Monday night, 68-57, in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Immaculata ups its mark to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the CSAC while Cedar Crest is now 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The opening five minutes was a see-saw affair featuring three ties and three lead changes. However, after Cedar Crest's Lizzy Sunderhaus made a layup at 13:30 to cut the Falcons' deficit to one, 12-11, Cedar Crest went cold from the field. The Falcons would not score again until 5:29 remaining in the first half while the Mighty Macs scored seven straight points, including six from Erin McBride, to extend their lead to eight.
Cedar Crest cut the margin to two, 23-21, with 3:47 remaining in the stanza but Immaculata quickly pushed its margin back to eight, 32-24, and the Mighty Macs led at halftime, 35-29.
Immaculata led by 14, 59-45, its largest margin of the contest, with 7:39 left in the second half when Cedar Crest scored nine consecutive points to cut the lead to 59-54. Immaculata's Bridget Welz made a jumper to put the Mighty Macs up 61-54 when the Falcons' Kelly Oakes hit a three to cut the difference to four points, 61-57, with 2:44 to play. However, Immaculata would hold Cedar Crest scoreless the rest of the way.
Immaculata's McTigue finished with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Leah Kuczynski registered a double-double on 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Chrissy Esbensen added eight points and eight assists.
Sunderhaus finished with a double-double for Cedar Crest on a team-best 25 points and 16 rebounds.
Immaculata next plays at Arcadia on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
