HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Immaculata University women's soccer team got out to an early 2-0 lead, and held on for the 3-2 victory at Centenary College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mighty Macs, who improve to 8-5-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference, handed the Lady Cyclones their first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) loss of the season, falling to 12-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the CSAC.
Immaculata jumped ahead early, scoring in the second minute of the game. After a scramble in front of the goal, Centenary was unable to clear the ball and Zena Tracey tapped the ball in for the early Mighty Macs' lead. Less than 20 minutes later, Immaculata found the back of the net again, as Kim Steinke scored on an assist from Tracey.
Centenary tallied in the 39th minute to cut the lead the Immaculata advantage to 2-1 at halftime. Bianca Santulli sent a cross from 40 yards out into the box to Sam Vanni, who gathered the ball and then sent it past Immaculata goalkeeper Jessica Gaburo.
However, the Mighty Macs put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute when Tracey picked up her second assist of the contest, this time on Bridget Cunningham's header.
The Lady Cyclones scored again in the 74th minute, cutting the lead to one, 3-2, but Immaculata held on for the victory.
Centenary outshot Immaculata, 19-11, but all of the Mighty Macs' shots were on goal. Centenary also edged Immaculata in corner kicks, 5-2.
Gaburo finished the game making three saves to earn the win, while Ashley Denti stopped eight shots in the loss.
Immaculata returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, welcoming Marywood into Draper Walsh Stadium for a 12 p.m. tilt. The contest will also mark senior day for the Mighty Macs' as they honor seniors Ashley McMullen and Shana Kehoe.
