WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Immaculata University women's basketball squad began the 2009 portion of its season seeing its two-game winning streak snapped by Wilkes, 65-46, on Monday night at the Marts Center.
Dominique Murray tallied a double-double for the Mighty Macs with 15 points and 11 rebounds to pace the squad. Murray also registered four steals and two blocks. Kasey Hicks chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Courtney Dixon amassed 10 rebounds, four points and three assists.
Sam Lynam got Wilkes on the board first when she sunk a three-pointer at the 16:56 mark. However, the Mighty Macs answered right back with seven straight points of their own for the 7-3 lead with 11:45 remaining in the opening period.
Immaculata maintained a slim margin until Brittany Ely put in a layup that put the Lady Colonels back ahead 10-9 at the 8:08 mark of the first half. Immaculata again took the lead, 14-13, with 7:01 to play after Hicks hit a layup and made the free throw to convert the three-point play.
From there, Wilkes held Immaculata scoreless until the 3:26 mark as the Lady Colonels marched out to a 21-14 lead until Murray halted the dry spell for the Mighty Macs. Brianna Duffin hit a jumper with 2:45 remaining but that was all Immaculata got to end the opening stanza, and Wilkes led 29-18 at the break.
Immaculata came out of the locker room and trimmed the deficit to six, 31-25, by the 16:42 mark as Murray contributed five points in the early run. However, Wilkes went on a 21-6 run during the next 6:32 to put the game out of reach for the Mighty Macs, 52-31, at the 10:10 mark.
Lynam led the Lady Colonels with 15 points and five rebounds while Chelsey Gosse tallied 14 rebounds and eight points.
Immaculata continues its road stretch on Thursday, Jan. 8, taking on Rosemont at 7 p.m.
