Immaculata Women Fall Short Against Gwynedd-Mercy, 75-61

IMMAULATA Pa. – Immaculata placed four players in double-digits in the scoring column, led by Chelsea McTigue's 17 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Alumnae Hall.

The Mighty Macs (7-11, 3-6 CSAC) and Griffins (14-4, 8-1 CSAC) were neck-and-neck midway through the second half, tied at 43-all with 10:56 remaining in the contest. That's when Gwynedd-Mercy made its 10-0 run, powered by six points from Kate Wisniewski, to take its first double-figure advantage of the contest.

Immaculata was able to put together short spurts to trim the margin to six on three different occasions, the last with 4:41 to play, 59-53, after Dominique Murray made the first of two free throws. Gwynedd-Mercy outscored Immaculata 7-3 over the next 2:26, jumping ahead, 66-56, with 2:15 remaining in the game.  The Griffins maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the way, with the final 14-point margin, 75-61, being their largest advantage of the afternoon.

Gwynedd-Mercy won the opening tip and raced out to a 7-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest, but by the 15:15 mark, Immaculata had cut its deficit to two, 11-9.

The Griffins rebuilt their lead to six, 17-11, after Bridget Morrin hit a jumper with 13:23 remaining in the opening half. Immaculata then held Gwynedd-Mercy without a basket from the field until the 7:31 mark, allowing the Mighty Macs to climb with three, 19-16.  

The Griffins led 25-18 with 5:38 to play but the Mighty Macs continued to claw away on a 6-0 run, all by Murray, and trailed just by one, 25-24, with 3:04 left. However, Gwynedd-Mercy finished the half on a 7-3 run, and the Griffins led at the break, 32-26.

The Mighty Macs came out of halftime on a 12-5 run during the first four minutes to take its only lead of the contest, 38-37, at the 16:08 mark. The teams then played to two ties, the last at 43-apiece.

Murray registered a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to along with three blocks and three steals. McTigue added six rebounds to her team-high 17 points. Bridget Welz and Kelly Brown each chipped in 11 points. Welz also added three assists and three steals while Brown recorded seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Wisniewski paced all scorers with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Griffins. McGrath was the only other Gwynedd-Mercy player in double figures with 14 points.

Immaculata hits the road on Monday, Feb. 2, traveling to the College of Notre Dame for a 7 p.m. tip.
