IMMACULATA, Pa. - A driving layup by Brittany Whetts with five seconds left on the clock propelled Neumann College to the 67-64 victory against Immaculata University Monday night at Alumnae Hall in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
Immaculata record now sits at 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC while Neumann evens its overall mark at 3-3, 1-0 CSAC.
Neumann led by 13 points, 43-56, with 10:35 remaining in the contest when Immaculata went on a tear. Immaculata's Kasey Hicks took a pass from Bridget Welz and drove in for the basket at the 7:57 mark to start what would be an 18-4 string for the Mighty Macs.
Whetts made two free throws with 7:29 to play in the contest before the Knights got the cold hand and went scoreless for the next four minutes. Bridget Welz nailed three pointers on two of the Mighty Macs next three trips down the court, and added a jumper with 4:56 remaining as Immaculata cut the margin to 58-53.
Dominique Murray added a jumper and Welz drove in for a layup to finish off 12 unanswered points for the Mighty Macs, and put Immaculata down by only one, 58-57 with 3:45 remaining.
Whetts stopped the scoreless streak for Neumann with her jumper at 3:31, increasing the Knights cushion to 60-57, but Immaculata wasn't done yet. Hicks sunk two free throws with 3:15 remaining, and she gave the Mighty Macs their first lead since the 11:44 mark of the first half with her layup and made free throw at the 2:40 mark, 62-60.
Neumann retook the lead on a trey from Nicole Feby just inside the two-minute mark and pushed its advantage to 64-62 on a free throw from Sami Borcky with 1:27 left on the clock.
Neumann sent Murray to the foul line four times during the final 25 seconds in which she went 2-for-4, tying the game at 64-all. Following Murray's final free throw attempt, Neumann had time to set up its offense and with five ticks on the clock got the ball to Whetts as she drove into the lane for the basket. Whetts was fouled on the play and sunk the free throw for the final 67-64 margin.
Murray led Immaculata in both scoring and rebounding with 16 points and seven rebounds, ands he also added four assists. Welz finished with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Hicks chipped in 13 points, five assists and two steals.
The Knights finished with three players in double figures in the scoring column, led by Whetts' 23 points and 10 rebounds. Krista DiRomualdo chipped in 14 points, while Feby added 11 points.
Immaculata will take a break from the league slate with a non-conference game against PSU Harrisburg on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Alumnae Hall.
