Field Hockey Advances to AEC Championship Game with 1-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy

Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata field hockey team (10-8, 3-1 AEC) defeated rival Gwynedd Mercy (4-14, 2-2 AEC) 1-0 in the Atlantic East Conference Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.  With the win the Mighty Macs will advance to the Atlantic East Conference Championship Game on Saturday, November 9th at Marywood University.

Alexis Andrada scored in the game's 25th minute off an assist from Della George that gave Immaculata its margin of victory. Julia Levase and the Immaculata defense held off the Griffins to preserve the 1-0 win.

This is the first time that an Immaculata field hockey team has advanced to a championship game since 1982. The 1982 team lost in the EAIAW Division III Championship Game to West Virginia Wesleyan 2-1.

How it Happened
  • Immaculata registered the first shot on goal in the game's 2nd minute when Emilyn Bivens shot was saved by Gwynedd Mercy's goalkeeper Kelly Weaver.
  • Kailey Mayoros had a shot saved in the game's 10th minute.
  • Immaculata successfully defended two penalty corners in the first quarter of play.
  • Immaculata goalkeeper Julia Levase made a pair of saves in the game's 22nd and 23rd minute to keep the game scoreless.
  • Immaculata got on the board in the game's 25th minute when Della George played a long ball that sprung Alexis Andrada on a breakaway. Andrada shot the ball through the goalie's five hole to give the Mighty Macs a 1-0 lead.
  • Gwynedd Mercy refused to go quietly, as the Griffins earned five penalty corners in the third quarter. Immaculata was able to successfully defend all five.
  • Immaculata thought they had taken a 2-0 with Della George scoring after the buzzer at the end of the third quarter on an penalty corner continuation. The officials waved off the goal, saying when Immaculata made a pass, it ended the advantage thus halting play for the end of the quarter. So Immaculata led 1-0 after three quarters.
  • Gwynedd Mercy continued to pressure Immaculata with two penalty corners in the fourth quarter.
  • Immaculata was able to close out the 1-0 win.
Inside the Numbers
  • Alexis Andrada scored her 10th goal, and her 21st point of the season. With 21 points Alexis Andrada set a new IU program record of points in a season as a freshman. The record of 20 points was previously set by Ashley O'Donnell in 2011.
  • Della George registered her team high eighth assist on Andrada's goal. George was a factor on both offense and defense for Immaculata.
  • Julia Levase made three saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season, and the 17th of her career adding to her record totals.
  • The Immaculata defensive core of Madalyn Bonner, Kaitlin Gale, Kayla Ledbetter, Rachel Madden, Victoria Atkinson, and Della George limited Gwynedd Mercy's shots and successfully defended 10 penalty corners.
  • Immaculata midfielders Jillian Vandenbraak and Abby Fekete provided strong support on the offensve and defensive sides for Immaculata.
