ARLINGTON, Va. – After taking down #4 Cabrini in a come-from-behind 89-86 overtime victory on Monday, the Immaculata men's basketball team is set for their second consecutive Atlantic East Semifinal appearance. The team will now travel on Wednesday as they face No. 1 Marymount in an 8:00 P.M. contest.
The Macs found themselves down 16 points with 11 minutes remaining the second half on Monday night. Down but not out, the Macs slowly chipped away at the Cavaliers' lead, cutting their leady to 74-72 with three minutes remaining. From that point on, freshman
Dylan Crews took command, scoring the Macs' final eight points on the half, forcing overtime in a tied 80-80 contest. The Macs would eventually take the victory in overtime 89-86.
"Monday night was the first college playoff game for most of our young team and they loved the atmosphere," said head coach
Jayson Hyman. "We have struggled to close games all season, so we are happy to win against a good Cabrini team in comeback fashion. It's a huge boost in confidence for the team as a whole. Moving forward, we understand every game is different so now it's time to focus on Marymount."
Marymount, meanwhile, comes off a first-round bye as the first seed overall in the Tournament. The top seed is currently riding a seven-game winning streak in-conference with their last conference loss coming against Immaculata in their first meeting on January 26
th.
Asa Kitchen led the Macs to victory in their first meeting with the Saints, dropping 20 points as the Macs claimed the victory 76-62. The Macs then lost their next meeting against the Saints last Wednesday on the Mighty Macs' senior night 70-66. Marcus Stubbs led the Saints to their victory, dropping 23 points on the night. Miles Brown and Montell Cooper also contributed with 15 points and 11 points, respectively.
"In getting ready for Wednesday, we have to revisit both games but also understand that this game is within a new season," said Hyman. "Both teams may look completely different, so we are going to do our best to prepare for a competitive game."
Wednesday's semifinal matchup will be the Macs' second consecutive Atlantic East Semifinal appearance. The Mighty Macs will now look to secure their ticket to the Atlantic East Championship for the first time in history by toppling the top seed.
"We love it, our game against Cabrini just shows that we compete in big games and that our guys step up when needed and they battle until the end. Being back in the semifinals is big for our program and for our young guys. Now we need to keep this going and take the next big step as a program," concluded Hyman.
