IMMACULATA, Pa.- Following a short two-match season in 2020, fourth-year head coach
Rob Smith and the Immaculata women's volleyball team return to the court for the 2021 season eager to compete and make a return to the Atlantic East Tournament after narrowly missing a spot in the field at the end of the 2019 season.
Immaculata, who was picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic East preseason coaches poll, returns to the court on September 2
nd against former league rival Cedar Crest before embarking on a four-match road trip, which will keep them away from home for the better part of the next two weeks.
In 2020, the Mighty Macs took to the court twice, ending the year with a record of 0-2 after falling to Neumann in the season-opener and Cedar Crest in the season-finale days later.
"The coaching staff and the players are all very excited to get back on the court, work hard, and have a full season this year," opened Smith. "Only playing two matches last year and just having a few practices to prepare has allowed the players to appreciate every minute of practice they have and work hard. We had a strong preseason and were able to utilize our gym time as much as possible. The players worked extremely hard and are ready to battle this upcoming season," explained Smith.
In 2021, Immaculata will look to its young core, who gained vital experience a year ago, to continue their development and help move the program forward in the new season. Junior McKenna Ryan returns to the court in a familiar role as the Macs libero, having served in this capacity throughout the first two years of her Mighty Mac career. In 2020, Ryan led the team in digs with 23 on the year, which marked the second season in a row in which she paced the team in this category after logging a team-best 232 as a freshman in 2019. Fellow junior
Isabelle Davis will also look to build off the experience gained from her first two seasons as a Mighty Mac after ending last year in a tie for fourth on the team in digs with 10 on the 2020 season.
Immaculata will also look to a trio of sophomores in
Emily Ettien,
Isabella Ridgell, and
Ava Thorley to build off their successes from a season ago. In her abbreviated rookie season, Ettien ended the year with the team lead in assists (25) and aces (6) while also ranking in a tie for fourth on the team in digs with 10. Ridgell and Thorley also enjoyed strong freshman campaigns as Ridgell is the teams leading returner in kills and blocks with seven and two a season ago, while her four aces as a freshman rank second among returners while Thorley ranks second amongst returners in kills and blocks with six and one a season ago. Immaculata also returns sophomore
Giavanna Perrone and senior
Devyn Crowder, who provide vital experience and depth to the Macs lineup.
"We are going to look to our upperclassman and our seniors to lead by example this season. We also have a strong group of sophomores and juniors that will get a lot of playing time and plan on showcasing their talent this season. Having such a short season last year has made the players hungry to come out in full force this fall," concluded Smith.
In addition to a strong group of returners, Smith and the Mighty Macs also welcome a pair of freshmen in
Natalie DiNunzio and
Emilie Schultz, who are both expected to help contribute to the Macs success in the upcoming 2021 season.
