IMMACULATA, Pa.- On Wednesday afternoon, the Immaculata women's tennis team will look to repeat as Atlantic East Champions as Immaculata will host Marywood in the 2021 edition of the Atlantic East Women's Tennis Championship. First serve in the Championship match is set for 3 p.m.
In the inaugural Championship at the conclusion of the 2019 season, Immaculata capped a perfect run through Atlantic East action with a 5-3 victory over Gwynedd Mercy to hoist the first Conference Championship in program history and the first Atlantic East title in school history.
In 2021, Immaculata began the year with a record of 1-1 following a pair of challenging non-league matches against Moravian and Lancaster Bible before going 3-0 through Atlantic East regular season play with convincing 9-0 victories over Cabrini and Neumann and an 8-1 victory over Marywood to earn the top seed in the Atlantic East Tournament. In the semifinal round, Immaculata matched up against rival Cabrini and defeated the Cavaliers by a final of 5-0 after sweeping doubles action and claiming third and sixth singles to advance to the Championship match.
On the other side of the bracket, Marywood has played to an overall record of 5-1 and a mark of 3-1 in league play with a 9-0 win over Cabrini, forfeit victory over Neumann, and a narrow 5-4 win over Gwynedd Mercy to conclude the regular season with its lone loss coming against Immaculata to open league play. After defeating the Griffins for the first time since 2013 to conclude the regular season, the Pacers and Griffins matched up again in the semifinals with Marywood prevailing by a 5-0 final, sweeping doubles and capturing fourth and fifth singles to secure the Atlantic East Championship match appearance.
In the earlier meeting between Immaculata and Marywood, the Mighty Macs traveled to Scranton and took an 8-1 decision from the Pacers to open Atlantic East play. In this match, Immaculata swept doubles action as
Caleigh Masterman and
Elizabeth Lipscomb took first doubles while
Annamarie Degnan and
Morgan Jacob took second doubles with Jess Dougherty and
Kelly O'Brien claiming the third doubles victory to give the Macs an early 3-0 lead. In singles play, Masterman and Jacob captured the first and second spots before Marywood countered with a third singles victory to score it's first and only point of the match. Lipscomb responded to this with a fourth singles victory while Dougherty and O'Brien claimed fifth and sixth singles to lift Immaculata to the 8-1 victory over Marywood.
