SCRANTON, Pa. – Trailing until the final at-bat, third-seeded Immaculata University knocked off top-seeded Marywood University, 3-2, in an elimination game of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Softball Championship early Saturday afternoon.
Â
It was an ominous sky for most of the game and a light sprinkle of rain at times, but the Mighty Macs got luck on their side in the top of seventh as they trailed 2-0 to Marywood.
Meghan Kugler led off the top half of the inning with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a grounder.
Kayla Sponsel then singled into center field but Kugler was forced to stay at second. Immaculata was down to its final out and still in need of two runs to tie the game when
Abigail Carter came to the plate.
Â
Carter hit the ball to the second baseman, who bobbled the ball which allowed Carter to reach. However, the throw to first was offline and
Isabella Mirarchi, who was pinch running for Kugler, was able to score from second to cut the lead to 2-1.
Ashley Rey then came to the plate and the rookie delivered a two-run single into right center bringing both
Laura DiLucia, running for Sponsel, and Carter home for the tying and go-ahead runs.
Â
Marywood got a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but a ground ball to
Michaela Petito playing first ended the contest to advance the Mighty Macs further into the tournament, 3-2.
Â
The Pacers broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third as Marywood got two runners on base on errors, and a single by Heather Schultz scored Sara Hayes.
Â
It remained a 1-0 game until the bottom of the sixth as Brooke Labs walked and Alexa Scala doubled into left center to get runners at second and third with only one out. Kirstie Alvarez then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Labs for the Pacers second run.
Â
Ashley Rey and
Emily Mesey each finished the game with two hits, while Rey had the two RBIs.
Â
Immaculata pitcher
Jessica Bormann tossed all seven innings giving up just four hits and two runs, only one earned run. She walked one and struck out four Pacers.
Â
