Softball Advances In CSAC Championship With 4-2 Win

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The third-seeded Immaculata University softball team advanced into the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship with a 4-2 win against sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon in a CSAC First Round contest at the IU Softball Field.
 
Immaculata (23-14) travels to second-seeded Neumann University on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. to begin the double-elimination championship tournament. The rest of the championship will pick up on Saturday afternoon at top-seeded Marywood. Fourth-seeded Cabrini defeated fifth-seeded Cedar Crest, 10-5, in the other first-round contest.
 
The two teams did all the scoring during the first four innings, and it was a close game until the final out. Immaculata scored one run in the first, and Gwynedd Mercy came back with two runs in the second to lead, 2-1. Immaculata then tied the game at 2-2 with one run in the bottom of the third, and took the lead in the fourth with two runs.
 
The Mighty Macs began the fourth inning with singles from Michaela Petito and Meghan Kugler, but Petito would later be out as Moriah Hunter reached on a fielder's choice. Kugler would score as Abigail Carter reached on a throwing error to keep the inning alive, and Jessica Bormann would follow with a single up the middle to score Hunter.
 
Immaculata plated its one run in the first inning on three singles by Carter, Ashley Rey and the RBI single from Annemarie Bartow into right field.
 
Gwynedd Mercy (17-18) opened the second inning with a double, but the runner was thrown out caught stealing. The next batter drew a walk, but was out on Erin Hallahan's fielder's choice. Marisa Bentley singled into left field to get two runners on, and the Griffins scored their first run as Erin Dowd reached on a fielding error. Bentley then scored to take the 2-1 lead as Becki Christoffers singled into center field.
 
The Immaculata half of the third inning started with Carter and Bormann both having singles. Bormann stole second to get runners at second and third, and Carter tied the game at 2-2 as she scored on Bartow's sacrifice fly to right field.
 
The Griffins threatened in the top of the sixth as the loaded the bases with two outs. However, Bormann was able to get a strikeout looking to end the inning. Gwynedd Mercy got a two-out double in the top of the seventh, but Bormann got a timely strikeout to end the game and advance the Mighty Macs. Overall, the Griffins left 10 runners on base during the game.  
 
Carter, Bormann, Rey and Petito all had two hits in the game, while Bartow had two RBIs and Bormann drove in one run.
 
Bormann got her 12th win the circle going seven innings. She gave up 10 hits and two runs, no earned runs, while walking two batters and striking out three.
 
Gwynedd Mercy pitcher Alyssa Morales gave up 11 hits, four runs, two earned runs, walked one and struck out two in six innings.
