IMMACULATA, Pa. - On a pleasant spring afternoon, the Immaculata softball team (10-8, 7-1 CSAC) split its home doubleheader against Centenary University (7-13, 5-3 CSAC) in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. The Mighty Macs fell in game one by a score of 3-2, and then went on to win game two, 8-0, in five innings.
In game two, the Mighty Macs got a stellar pitching performance from freshman
Michaela Petito (5-3), who went the distance for Immaculata striking out six and scattering just five hits in the shutout. Petito found herself in a small jam in the top of second when after striking out the first batter of the inning she surrendered a walk to Juli Wright and then gave up back-to-back singles to Jessica Hewitt and Jamie Weingarten. Petito then proceeded to strike out the next two batters in Amanda Fox and Alexis Wilson to work right out of trouble and lead the bases loaded.
While the Mighty Macs bats were quiet in game one only managing to push across two runs, their bats were anything but quiet in game two. The Macs started off the scoring early in the first inning when
Ashley Rey found her way on with a two-out single down the first base line before junior
Annemarie Bartow came through with a line drive home run in left center field.
The Immaculata bats continued to strike in the bottom of the second when freshman
Sydney Sturgill singled to lead off the inning before advancing to third following a two-base throwing error. Sturgilll scored on an RBI single from senior
Meghan Kugler. Sophomore
Jessica Bormann extended the inning after reaching on a fielding error, and both Kugler and Bormann came home when Rey lined a two-RBI double down the left field line giving the Mighty Macs a 5-0 lead.
Following a three-run bottom of the second, the Cyclones again threaten in the top of third after Justine Sefura led off the inning with a single to right center. Carolyn Clites continued what had already been a big day for her when she laced a double into left center field to put runners on second and third. Petito was able to work out of this trouble getting Sammie Darling to pop out to first before striking out Wright to end the threat once again.
Immaculata had another big half inning in the bottom of the third when they started off the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles from freshman
Emily Mesey, Petito, and Sturgill. Mesey and Petito were able to score on Sturgill's single after advancing on a passed ball. Sturgill would later come home on a single from junior
Paige Murphy to give the Mighty Macs an 8-0 lead. This proved to be all Immaculata needed as Petito faced just one over the minimum during the final two innings to earn the split with the Cyclones.
Rey finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Sturgill was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
In game one, the Mighty Macs lost a heart-breaker by a final score of 3-2. Bormann went the distance in the circle surrendering three runs on 11 hits, but the Macs bats could not solve the Cyclones' pitchers. Immaculata had a runner reach second base in each of the first three innings but they would not break through until the bottom of the fourth.
In the fourth inning, the Cyclones started the scoring in the top half of the inning when the Mighty Macs surrendered three-straight singles to Hewitt, Weingarten, and Amanda Fox. Hewitt came around to score the first run of the game on a sharply hit line drive up back to Bormann giving the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead. Immaculata also broke through in the fourth for one run after Mesey started the inning with a laser of a double down the left field line that rolled to the wall. Petito followed with a single to give the Macs runners on first and third with no outs. Following getting the bases loaded after
Victoria Post was hit by a pitch, Kugler delivered a base hit that scored Mesey.
In the top of the fifth, the Cyclones took the lead back when Clites hit a home run over the right field fence to regain a 2-1 lead. However, the Mighty Macs answer right back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rey found her way on with a double into right center field before advancing to third on a passed ball. Rey then scored on a RBI-single to third off the bat of Bartow.
The score was not tied long as the Cyclones pushed another run across in the top of the sixth when Alexis Wilson reached on an error. Wilson advanced after Ashley Eisenstein hit a single back up the middle before coming home on a RBI-double from Clites.
Immaculata will be back in action tomorrow on the road at Cedar Crest in a doubleheader getting underway at noon.
